As the first mixed-friction rack railway, the connection between Blankenburg (Harz) and Tanne, built between 1884 and 1886, is unique in the world. Around 300 vertical meters had to be overcome on steep sections on this approximately 30-kilometre route; a masterpiece of construction from the 19th century.
Today the Rübeland Railway runs on certain dates from Blankenburg (Harz) to Rübeland through the beautiful Harz landscape. Narrow turns lead through the heights of the Harz Mountains, the eventful train journey goes through a tunnel and over the Krockstein viaduct. Enjoy this beautiful 40-minute ride with the so-called “Mountain Queen”, the steam locomotive 95 027.
You can take your bike with you during the cycling season. The bicycles are transported free of charge in a special bicycle cart.
Tickets and gift vouchers are also available from the Blankenburg Tourist Information and at the Blankenburg train station.
