Baroque Castle Garden

The castle gardens of Blankenburg belong to the “Garden Dreams Historic Parks in Saxony-Anhalt”. With over 100 hectares, the garden complex between the large and small castle is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in Saxony-Anhalt. The impressive terrace garden and Baroque garden were created in 1718. At that time the county of Blankenburg was expanded to become an imperial principality. As an expression of courtly representation, the small pleasure garden with today's Little Castle was created. Fountains, sandstone figures, vases, colourful flower beds and precisely laid out hedges reflect the basic Baroque shape.

The Blankenburg Castle Gardens received special recognition in 2016 with the presentation of the "Green Flag Award"; an award for gardens in particularly good condition and with an appealing visitor experience. Above the terrace garden, only separated by the city wall, is the mountain garden with tea house and princess tower. In the area of the large terrace by the tea house, a Sexton Garden (Küstergarten) was already located in the middle of the 17th century. At the beginning of the 18th century a 35-meter-long staircase and two fountains were built. There have been further changes and extensions to the current appearance.

On a walk up to the tea house, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city of Blankenburg (Harz) and the Harz foothills. The orangery square below the terrace garden was once a special part of the garden. The large area, which was very memorable in the 18th century due to a rich collection of potted plants, an oval fountain, statues and orange trees, was used for performances of a garden theater. The pheasant garden is located between the Little Castle and the Schlosshotel. This was laid out around 1700 and redesigned several times over the centuries until it was used as an allotment garden after 1945. The pheasant garden has been redesigned as such since 2003.

As part of a project, the historical structures were made visible again and the mythological significance of the pheasants was artistically staged. The castle park boasts an approximately 200-year-old avenue of chestnut trees. The road connections from the 17th and 18th centuries still exist here today. The romantic castle pond was part of the water supply system for the inner-city mills and the fountain in the pheasant and terrace garden.

The oldest part of the castle gardens is the zoo, which was built in 1668. Historically the counts and dukes used to go hunting here. To this day, the character of the hunting park has hardly changed. At the highest point, the Calvinusberg, the foundations of the former Luisenburg lookout castle are still visible. The castle gardens are an excellent place to linger, pause and enjoy.
