Little Castle

The Little Castle (sometimes referred to as the Garden Palace) was built in 1725 as a princely garden house. In the classic Baroque architectural style with swinging forms and a love of detail the building forms the link between the Baroque castle gardens and the old town. Over the centuries, the building changed its appearance from a half-timbered building to a sandstone Baroque castle. Duke Ernst August von Braunschweig and Lüneburg lived here with his family from 1914-1918. One of the most prominent “children of the city” was born in the Little Castle in 1917: the future Queen of Greece Friederike von Hannover, mother of the Spanish Queen Sofia and grandmother of Spanish King Felipe VI. Where emperors and kings once held court, where lavish summer festivals were celebrated, there is still an attractive event hall today.

The former local history museum had to make way in 2010 in order to let the Little Castle shine in new splendor through an extensive renovation.

Today the modern tourist information and the project office of the Harzer Wandernadel are located on the ground floor. Various seating groups allow you to linger in the spacious room. This way, guests can find out more about the holiday and excursion offers in Blankenburg (Harz) and in the Harz Mountains. The event hall is available for exhibitions, concerts and as a registry office.
